The rivals appeared briefly together on stage in California before being quizzed separately by evangelical pastor Rick Warren.

Democrat Senator Obama said his biggest moral failure was experimenting with drugs during a “difficult youth”.

His Republican rival said: “My greatest moral failing, and I am a very imperfect person, is the failure of my first marriage.”

Mr Obama reiterated his support for women’s right to an abortion, but said he wanted to reduce the number of procedures carried out.

Speaking about his personal faith, he said: “I believe that Jesus Christ died for my sins.

He also said marriage should only be a “union between a man and a woman” although he supports same-sex civil unions and similar rights for same-sex partners.

But major differences remain among Nato members as to how far they should go in seeking to punish Russia, analysts say.

Leaders of Pakistan’s ruling coalition are due to discuss their next steps after the exit of their long-time opponent, President Pervez Musharraf.

The coalition, led by the parties of the late Benazir Bhutto and ex-Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, held a first, inconclusive round of talks on Monday.

Mr Musharraf stepped down after nine years in power to avoid a move by the coalition to impeach him.

Pakistan was agog with speculation that beleaguered President Pervez Musharraf is likely to announce his resignation in his address to the nation today and may leave the country.

However, his spokesman Rashid Qureshi dismissed the reports of his possible resignation as “absolute rubbish and nonsense”.

There are also reports that Musharraf may not not resign and might announce repeal of National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO), under which leaders including late former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto and her husband Asif Zardari were given immunity, and also rebut the charges being levelled against him in an impeachment motion planned by the ruling coalition.
